Wontok appoints Mick Esber as Head of Technology

SYDNEY, 28 SEP 2020: Leading cyber security provider Wontok is pleased to announce the appointment of industry veteran Mick Esber as Head of Technology.
Mr Esber joins Wontok with more than 20 years of experience in technology leadership roles as well as solutions engineering and cyber security architecture.
He was formerly Chief Technology Officer at lending marketplace Lodex Australia and betting company Ladbrokes Australia where he held the CTO position.

According to Wontok chief operating officer Bruce Perry, the growing demand meant an increase in headcount – during the pandemic.
“Due to demand for our services we’ve hired around 10 new employees in the past few months in various capacities, including software development, business and operations.
“We’re very pleased to be able to positively contribute to the community and economy by creating jobs,” Mr Perry said.
Mr Esber said he was thrilled to head Wontok’s technology team, especially at a time when a succession of high-profile cyber security events has been cast into the spotlight.

According to the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) annual Cyber Threat Report, July 2019 to June 2020 (PDF), the agency responded to 2266 cyber security incidents during the period.
Citing the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s Targeting Scams 2019 report, the agency said Australians had lost more than $634 million to scams in 2019.
“While the true cost of cybercrime to the Australian economy is difficult to quantify, industry estimates have previously placed cyber security incidents as high as $29 billion annually,” the ACSC said, in reference to research by Microsoft.
The ACSC warned that cybercriminals had quickly adapted their phishing methods to take advantage of COVID-19.
The ACSC received over 45 pandemic-themed cybercrime and cyber security incident reports from March 10 to March 26 alone.
