Polar blast on Australia's east coast see temperatures plummet

Australians on the east coast have woken to an unusually chilly morning as a polar blast sends temperatures falling way below the November average.

The Daily Mail reports the cold weather is due to a 'polar vortex' sweeping up from Antarctica, with Sydney reaching just 9am after 5am on Thursday, while Melbourne was an icy 7.2C overnight.

Mount Hotham in the Victorian Alps hit -7C overnight, the state's coldest temperature on record for November, the Bureau of Meteorology reported.

Ballarat fell to 1.8C, and Hamilton, in the state's southwest, reached 3.7C.

The website said those living in the nation's capital were also in for a brutal morning with temperatures dipping as low as 5C in Canberra, while Hobart was 8.9C.

While temperatures are set to rise across the capital cities throughout Thursday, it will be unseasonably chilly for this time of year, with summer just around the corner.
